Now Hiring: Senior Designer / Art Director

Job Description

Data & Society seeks an ambitious full-time Senior Designer / Art Director to lead the design of our in-house research products, digital assets, and website. This role would suit a craft-focused and highly talented interactive and print designer with 8-10 years’ experience in the private sector. The role offers substantive new source material—and significant freedom to exercise a creative voice.

Data & Society is a dynamic, intellectual nonprofit with strong brand recognition with influencers in the technology, academic, and policy sectors. Its work on the societal implications of data-centric and automated technologies is featured regularly in major outlets such as CNN, the New York Times, Washington Post, VICE, Wall Street Journal, and WIRED.

The Senior Designer / Art Director will drive, develop, and promote a culture of visual design at Data & Society. They will concept, scope, present, refine, and execute inventive design concepts for new research releases—including digital reports, supplementary materials, and website and social media assets. Above all, they will be a true brand champion who interprets, translates and extends our brand, product, and style guidelines into new audience experiences—including and especially via the Data & Society website.

The designer will report to the Director of Communications and work out of our New York City office. They will work with the Director of Communications to hone audience-specific report and whitepaper formats targeting decision-makers from the technology industry, policy sector, and the general public. They will have the support of a Communications Production Manager in ensuring timely project scoping, resourcing, and delivery; on the design side, this includes recruiting and managing trusted third-party collaborators: programmers, other designers, illustrators, photographers, filmmakers, and more. They will additionally have the support of a Media Programmer & Producer in making UX improvements and transitioning legacy digital assets to new brand standards. Due to the leadership nature of the role, the designer should be skilled in cross-disciplinary facilitation, lateral communication, and design team management.

They are expected to regularly present concepts, wireframes, and mock-ups to senior management during project kick-off phases, as well as articulate their strategic design intent to researchers during feedback cycles. The Communications team at Data & Society prizes exceptional time management and the ability to nimbly—and humorously—adapt to changing circumstance.

About Data & Society Research Institute

Data & Society focuses on the social and cultural issues arising from data centric technological development. We seek to inform and develop frames for discussion of these complex issues both through our own research and through supporting the expansion of a nascent field of actors concerned about these topics.  We want to be a resource, a catalyst, and a convener as new sectors recognize the complexity of the issues and the need for tradeoffs when they increase their reliance on data as a tool for management and decision-making. We see the field as comprised of researchers, journalists, policymakers, technologists, industry leaders and workers, funders, advocates, and civil society actors. We are committed to helping this field engage substantively, and with an evidence base, in debates over implications arising from the increasing reliance on data at scale to automated decision-making across a range of sectors.

The work and well-being of Data & Society is strengthened by the diversity of our network and our differences in background, culture, experience, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, and much more. We welcome applications from people of color, women, the LGBTQIA community, and persons with disabilities.
