Now Hiring: Communications Production Manager

Deadline for applications: January 31, 2020
For questions, email [email protected]

Data & Society seeks a Communications Production Manager to support the Director of Communications by managing and refining the editorial process of dynamic new research products that address important issues in emerging technology.

Both a product and project management specialist, the CPM will unite our research and communications teams with regular, clear internal communications that enforce a rigorous pipeline of digital and print products. The CPM will create benchmarks, enforce deadlines, and manage daily contributor roles and tasks through key product stages including design, layout, proofing, and digital asset production. The CPM reports to the Director of Communications. The position is based out of our New York City office.

About the Communications Production Manager
The CPM will manage the entire lifecycle of our research publications, ensuring that project researchers and collaborators are informed and prepared to meet deadlines and deliver to standard. This mid-career specialist role will drive the process from individual experts, to internal research production staff, to external communications specialists who work to make this research more visible and public.

The CPM understands how to motivate intellectuals and specialists to produce on time, act as a deadline hawk, and effectively match project benchmarks to an overall public relations strategy. They thrive on busting complexity and untangling individual objectives. They are a power user of project management tools such as Asana, and have held one or more professional roles that involved shaping and managing publication workflows for multi-person collaborations. They are capable of managing proofreaders and providing editorial support at the graduate academic level, and know how to both delegate tasks, and verbally and visually present their needs and objectives to executive-level colleagues.

Responsibilities will include:

Publication and Product Management

  • Oversee and manage the process of developing products in the research pipeline, including:
    • Working with staff editors to support researchers and outreach leads as they develop general interest publications such as one-pagers, whitepapers, tip sheets, and reports;
    • Managing internal workflows with Asana, Google calendar, and email to keep team apprised of works-in-progress, deadlines, and launch plans;
    • Ensuring that editorial (e.g. proofreading) and design resources—either in-house or vendors—are lined up to support workflow;
    • Tracking internal drafts to maintain standards such as length, providing light copyediting or final proofreading to shorter drafts and products where needed;
    • Advising the Director of Communications on project launch timelines.
  • Support, as needed, the product delivery of new digital and print collateral as defined by the Data & Society’s marketing, development, and external engagement strategies.
  • Work with research team to continually improve pipeline processes, clarity, and capacity.

Project Management

  • Conduct project management of communications team products and inter-departmental collaborations, such as the annual report, to ensure high-quality, timely delivery.
  • Manage or help manage contracts and delivery benchmarks with outside production vendors.
  • Support internal communication efforts about production timelines and release schedules by providing regular updates via email and at editorial, executive, and staff meetings.
  • Ensure that products include correct brand standards and funder crediting.

Team Management

  • Assist the Director of Communications in supervising the day-to-day work of production staff to ensure harmony, high quality, and timely product delivery.
  • Manage the day-to-day task priorities of one full-time Senior Designer (with DOC providing art direction) and one part-time Media Producer and Programmer.
  • Contribute to departmental efforts around staff development and training.

Practical Considerations

  • This is not a remote position. You must work full time from the Data & Society New York City office.
  • Annual salary is commensurate on experience, and you will be offered a generous benefits package and paid time off.
  • You must be eligible to work in the United States. We are unable to sponsor visas.

To apply, please submit the following items via this link ASAP:

  • A cover letter explaining your interest in this role, how you learned about this opportunity, your background in managing teams and projects in the past, and why you would be a good fit for this position.
  • Your resume/CV.
  • Please include the name, affiliation, and contact information for two professional references.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Please feel free to contact us at [email protected] should you have any questions about the position. Questions about the opportunity or process will not reflect negatively on your application.
