March 26, 2025 — Data & Society (D&S) is pleased to announce that Michelle Miller, director of innovation for the Center of Labor and a Just Economy at Harvard Law School, has joined its board of directors. Miller joined the Center after a decade as the co-founder and co-director of Coworker.org, an organization that nurtures early stage worker-led organizing across multiple industries. She is a pioneer of the labor movement’s body of research that responds to the proliferation of software and technology tools being used to manage and surveil workers and working class people.
“Data & Society is doing the important work of interrogating how technology impacts workers and the future of labor. I could not be more excited to contribute to the future of the organization, and to help fulfill its ambition to work more closely with leading advocates and nonprofits, including labor organizations, in these efforts,” Miller said.
At Harvard, Miller focuses on changes to work and organizing brought on by the integration of technologies like automated software, algorithmic management, and artificial intelligence.
“Michelle is a wonderful pioneer and organizer. Our board of directors, and Data & Society as a whole, will benefit immensely from her knowledge and experience, particularly as we face a future where issues of technology justice are more strongly intertwined with the needs of labor,” said Charlton McIlwain, president of the board.
“Data & Society envisions a world in which we shift power to workers and community control, versus the current status quo where data-driven technologies increasingly give power to managers and owners of capital,” said Janet Haven, executive director of Data & Society. “There is no better collaborator and visionary for the organization’s ambitions in this area than Michelle Miller.”
